funeral processes

Call an ambulance on 000.

The paramedics will complete a life extinct form and contact the person’s doctor to issue a cause of death certificate. The person may then be taken into the care of your chosen funeral director.

Sometimes a cause of death certificate cannot be issued. This may happen if someone who appears to be healthy dies unexpectedly at home; the doctor cannot determine the medical cause of death; or the death is unnatural. The police are contacted in these circumstances. This may seem worrying or excessive, but it is a normal part of the process. The police will liaise with a team of independent doctors to determine whether a cause of death certificate can be obtained. If a cause of death certificate cannot be obtained, the police will report the death to the coroner and arrange for the person to be transported to a health facility or mortuary by a government contracted funeral director.

The coroner will work with a team of coronial nurses and forensic pathologists to determine a probable cause of death through an autopsy or post-mortem. The coroner will release the body as soon as possible—almost always within three business days of the person’s death. The person may then be taken into our care and a funeral can be arranged.

Each funeral consist of 3 main costs: the plot fee, the burial fee, and the funeral service fee. At WIC the service charge is $1800 for adults which includes transport from the location of death, final washing, and transport to the cemetery. Families also need to pay the cemetery charges which can range from $5000 to $15 000 depending on cemetery location.

Yes. Prepurchasing plots will greatly reduce the burden on families at the time of death. To purchase a plot contact Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust for Melbourne locations, Geelong Cemetries Trust for Lara and Geelong locations, and Maddingley General Cemetery for Bachus Marsh inquiries. Generally, no. In extremely rare cases we are able to arrange a same day burial, however most funerals will be held the next business day or the day after release from the coroner if they require investigations.

We have modern facilities at Werribee Islamic Centre which are located in the basement floor of Melbourne Grand Mosque. This is a secure facility with a cold room. We also perform the ghusl in this area and have a dedicated waiting area for families to sit with their loved one before the final parting.
